Turn a briefing into decisions
Filter NOTAM, weather and navigation availability by route, time and consequence.
Which NOTAM actually changes the plan?
Read validity and operational consequence, not just the number of briefing pages.
Match place, time and operation
A NOTAM matters when its location, vertical limits, effective period and activity affect the planned operation or a credible contingency. Check UTC dates and any daily schedule carefully, especially across midnight. A closure outside the departure time can still affect a delayed arrival or a diversion.
For each relevant notice, state the consequence: runway unavailable, approach downgraded, navigation service lost, airspace avoided, opening hours changed or extra coordination required. This turns a document search into a planning decision. A brief title alone can hide conditional text or an exception.
Rebuild the affected chain
A runway closure can change departure performance, taxi time, SID, destination weather limits and alternate selection. A navaid outage can invalidate a route or approach even though another nearby facility remains on air. Recalculate the connected time, fuel and suitability inputs after a relevant change.
Aerodrome and route information must cover alternates and likely diversions, not only the scheduled destination. A plan that briefs one runway perfectly but omits its only practical alternate has left a decision unsupported.
Treat information status honestly
A computer briefing can contain duplicates, stale filters or notices with wording that needs interpretation. Resolve an ambiguity through the appropriate current official source and operational process; do not assume that silence in a filtered report proves availability.
The laboratory models a synthetic closure window and an ETA uncertainty band. If any relevant part of the expected arrival window overlaps the closure, investigate suitability rather than claiming a precise ETA guarantees access. In real operations, the governing planning windows and procedures come from the current requirements and operator documentation, not the arbitrary window width used in this demonstration.
Why do weather and navigation availability belong in the same briefing?
A destination is useful only if the aircraft can reach and use it under the expected conditions.
Use conditions at the relevant time
Update wind, temperature, significant weather, destination and alternate conditions for the expected passage or arrival times. A new headwind changes ETA as well as fuel; the later ETA may place the arrival in a different forecast period or an operating-hours restriction. Weather updates therefore propagate through the plan.
Distinguish a current observation from a forecast and from a trend or warning. Use each for its intended time and spatial coverage. A benign observation now does not establish conditions at an arrival several hours later.
Check navigation achievability
For a planned PBN operation, confirm the route and procedures are supported by the aircraft, current data and required sensors. Where the applicable system requires an integrity or availability prediction, check the relevant time and route, including alternates. An impressive satellite count is not the same as the required navigation integrity.
Consider NOTAM about GNSS interference, satellite outages, ground aids and approach availability. A forecast integrity gap may require a changed time, procedure, equipment combination or route under the applicable method. Do not use a generic laboratory pass as operational authorisation.
Avoid a common-mode alternate
A destination and its alternate can both rely on the same vulnerable navigation capability or weather region. Their names differ, but a single outage or widespread phenomenon can remove both options. Evaluate independence where the operating requirements and operational judgement call for it.
The synthetic time-window model displays whether an arrival interval intersects a navigation outage. It deliberately does not calculate RAIM, satellite geometry or RNP compliance. The planning lesson is to connect capability, time and procedure availability; an approved prediction tool and current operational criteria supply the real availability assessment.
Can you explain and apply the mechanism?
Four original questions. Work from the stated facts, then compare your reasoning with the explanation.
