Your Pilot InterviewATPL EASA

File the flight you actually intend

Keep ATS message fields, operational fuel planning and current processing status distinct.

Why is an ATS flight plan different from an operational flight plan?

The ATS message communicates intended movement and capability; the operational plan supports conduct and monitoring.

Understand the field groups

An ICAO-format FPL identifies the aircraft and flight rules/type, aircraft characteristics and equipment/capabilities, departure and timing, route/speed/level, destination and alternate information, and relevant other/supplementary information. Use the current form, filing guidance and regional requirements for exact syntax.

Equipment and PBN indicators must describe serviceable installed capability and applicable operational eligibility under the filing rules. A filed code does not create an approval or repair an unavailable sensor. Keep capability information aligned with the actual aircraft configuration and any MEL restriction.

Separate time quantities

Estimated off-block time is a departure clock time; estimated elapsed time is a duration for the defined FPL portion; fuel endurance is another duration with a different purpose. Do not enter block time or fuel endurance into an elapsed-time field merely because each is written as four digits.

In an HHMM duration,90 min is 0130, not 0090 or 1.30 decimal hours. A clock time requires a date and UTC context when relevant; a duration does not become a clock simply because it shares the same formatting. The laboratory explicitly labels which quantity it displays.

Retain current filing guidance

Regional processing requirements can supplement the basic ICAO structure. For IFPS, consult the current EUROCONTROL manual and applicable AIP guidance. A remembered code or archived manual can be syntactically or operationally outdated. Date-sensitive flight-plan details deserve current verification.

The synthetic lab formats a supplied airborne duration and a separate endurance; it does not validate a complete ICAOFPL. Its aim is to make time meaning visible. Actual acceptance, message handling and later ATC clearance are separate states, and the operational fuel plan remains necessary even when the ATS message is accepted.

Before filing, independently identify whether each four-digit entry is a clock or a duration and which endpoints it represents.

What does acceptance mean, and when must a plan be updated?

Follow the current message procedure and preserve the distinction between processing and clearance.

Read the processing state

A submitted plan can be accepted, rejected or require further handling under the processing system. Check the actual response and resolve errors through the prescribed procedure. A successful submission screen is not proof that the route is cleared or that every operational condition is suitable.

A material change to route, equipment, timing, destination or cancellation needs the applicable message or replacement procedure. Use current guidance for which fields can be amended and when a replacement or cancellation is required. Do not invent universal thresholds from a classroom example.

Keep repetitive plans in historical context

The syllabus includes the RPL concept: repeated services were represented through a repetitive plan process rather than an independently filed message for every occurrence. Current regional availability must be checked. EUROCONTROLNM ended its RPL service on 29 March 2020 and required individual flight plans for the affected flights.

That dated change is why a current lesson must distinguish knowledge of the concept from a claim that NM still accepts an RPL list. Another region’s procedure cannot be inferred from the former European service, and an old training document is not a current filing instruction.

Close the operational loop

After a route amendment, update the operational time, fuel, weather-window and mass consequences where applicable. A correctly amended ATS message can still coexist with an obsolete operational fuel plan if the two are not reconciled. The flight to be conducted must be supported by both.

The laboratory lets the elapsed duration and off-block minute change independently. A delay moves the clock arrival estimate, while a route change can alter the duration. Explain which input changed before choosing a message or calculation. Exact filing decisions must follow the current system guidance, not this simplified time display.

Can you explain and apply the mechanism?

Four original questions. Work from the stated facts, then compare your reasoning with the explanation.
