Taxi, runway boundaries and conditional clearance

Keep movement authority, runway clearance and conditions distinct.

Does a taxi clearance include a runway crossing?

Identify the physical boundary that needs explicit authority.

Separate route from runway permission

A taxi route describes how to move on the ground under its stated conditions. A runway holding point marks a boundary that must not be crossed without the applicable explicit clearance. Do not infer a crossing, line-up or take-off clearance from a general taxi destination, a moving aircraft ahead or the absence of a further warning.

Runway-related clearances and instructions require the specified readback. Preserve the runway number and any hold-short boundary. A line-up clearance does not authorise take-off. The expression TAKE-OFF is reserved for issuing or cancelling a take-off clearance; other communication uses the appropriate departure wording. This lexical separation reduces the chance that a preparatory exchange sounds like the actual clearance.

A boundary changes the decision

The synthetic aircraft is taxiing along a route that meets runway 27. Its route continues on the far side, but the current instruction holds short. The plotted destination does not override the hold-short instruction. In the laboratory, selecting taxi or line-up authority leaves the take-off gate closed; only the relevant explicit clearance changes that gate.

If the aircraft cannot identify the holding point or is uncertain whether a crossing clearance was issued, stop as appropriate and clarify rather than converting uncertainty into movement. The schematic has one simple intersection and assumes no emergency conflict; real aerodrome geometry, stop bars, markings, low-visibility procedures and local instructions require their own checks. The purpose is to make the logical difference between route information and permission at a protected runway boundary impossible to miss.

A further distinction

A runway number is an identity, not a quantity to round. Runway 23 and runway 27 can sound similar in a blocked exchange while placing the aircraft at entirely different physical boundaries on the aerodrome.

What must happen before a conditional clearance can be acted on?

The condition is part of the clearance, not background information.

Identify the traffic and the dependency

A conditional runway clearance links the permitted action to an identified traffic condition, under the applicable rules. Its structure identifies the aircraft, states the condition, gives the clearance and briefly reiterates the condition. The condition must be understood and the relevant aircraft or vehicle correctly identified by the participants as required. Do not replace positive identification with a guess that the nearest visible object must be the one meant.

Conditions involving an active runway are subject to specific restrictions, including that relevant traffic is in sight as required by SERA.8015 guidance. Readback needs to retain the condition and the action so that the controller can hear whether the dependency was understood. A naked LINE UP readback can erase the very restriction that makes the conditional instruction safe.

A false match is still a failed condition

In the synthetic scene, one arriving aircraft is the identified traffic and another is a distractor. Merely seeing an aircraft does not satisfy the condition. The learner must identify the specified traffic and observe the relevant condition before the diagram releases the action. The example is an instruction-logic drill, not a live runway clearance.

If the specified traffic is not positively identified or the condition is uncertain, clarify the instruction and remain within the current authority. Do not use the animated gate as a universal definition of how far traffic must pass; actual wording, local procedures and the controller’s instruction govern the operation. The key reasoning is that the clearance and its condition are a single constrained permission. Removing either the identity or the dependency changes what was authorised.

Can you explain and apply the mechanism?

Four original questions. Work from the stated facts, then compare your reasoning with the explanation.
