Engine control, starting, monitoring and relight
Understand engine control, starting, monitoring and relight through causal explanations, a worked case and an interactive laboratory.
Connect fuel scheduling to airflow and limits
Relate fuel scheduling to airflow, acceleration and engine limits rather than treating a thrust demand as immediate unrestricted fuel flow.
Mechanism and relationships
A turbine fuel control meters fuel to meet a requested engine output while maintaining stable acceleration and respecting relevant limits. Too rapid a fuel increase for the available airflow can increase temperature and disturb compressor matching; insufficient fuel can cause flameout. A full-authority digital engine control combines command inputs, sensed conditions and programmed schedules. Full authority describes its control role, not an absence of component limits, sensor dependencies or degraded modes.
Reason through the evidence
Spool-speed, temperature, pressure-ratio, torque and vibration indications represent different aspects of engine condition. N1 and N2 denote specific rotating assemblies according to type and are often expressed as percentages of reference speeds. EPR is a defined pressure ratio, while fan speed may be used as a thrust-setting parameter on other engines. Neither is a direct universal load-cell measurement of installed thrust. Engine lubrication, accessory drives and fuel heat exchange support operation but can introduce independent limitations.
Apply the explanation to a different case
A control demand passes through scheduling and limiting before fuel reaches the combustor. A sensor fault can therefore lead to a rejected demand, a substitute schedule or a degraded mode depending on the design. The label full authority does not mean that the controller has independent knowledge of true thrust. It uses measured and modelled parameters within an architecture. Compare commanded setting, achieved spool speed, temperature and relevant pressure rather than reading one parameter as a universal health certificate. A vibration trend may reveal a mechanical problem even when a thrust-setting parameter remains at the requested value.
Keep this distinction clear
An engine-driven accessory gearbox distributes mechanical power to specified pumps, generators and other equipment. A gearbox fault can therefore affect several services that appear independent on separate system pages. Their shared drive is a common dependency and belongs in a complete redundancy assessment.
Interpret a start as an ordered energy transition
Distinguish starter rotation, light-up and self-sustaining acceleration when interpreting a normal, hot, hung or failed start.
Mechanism and relationships
A starter first supplies shaft energy to establish compressor rotation and airflow. Fuel and ignition are introduced at the type’s defined conditions. A successful light-up raises gas temperature and turbine torque; the engine then accelerates toward self-sustaining operation. Starter disengagement, ignition removal and stabilisation follow the approved sequence. A hot start involves an excessive start temperature; a hung start fails to continue expected acceleration; no light-up means the expected ignition evidence is absent.
Reason through the evidence
These conditions are identified using several trends together: spool acceleration, temperature, fuel flow and relevant pressure. A temperature rise alone does not prove a healthy start, and a rotating spool alone does not prove combustion. In-flight relight capability depends on altitude, airspeed, spool windmilling or starter assistance, ignition and other envelope conditions. The synthetic time history in the lab demonstrates evidence patterns only; it provides no start-abort threshold, timing or relight envelope for a real engine.
Apply the explanation to a different case
During a synthetic start, core rotation appears first, light-up is then represented by a temperature rise, and turbine work supports further acceleration. Reversing that causal order would imply combustion without an airflow-establishing mechanism. An excessive temperature trace and a low-acceleration trace are separate observations and can occur together. The graph therefore shows both speed and temperature on labelled scales, with no red line pretending to be an approved abort limit. Real start timings, starter cut-out, cooling periods and relight actions require the type-specific procedure and the actual conditions.
Keep this distinction clear
Ignition may be selected for starting, relight or other defined conditions, rather than remaining continuously energised in every normal operating phase. Continuous turbine combustion and continuous electrical ignition are different concepts. The existing flame can be self-sustaining even when the starting igniters are no longer firing.

Four original questions. Work from the stated facts, then compare your reasoning with the explanation.
